An applique design using strip piecing – you will need experience in this prior to the workshop.
You will learn how to use programmed stitches on your machine, machine couching and twin needle stitching.

This is made by strip piecing 8 different fabrics together and adding further curved strips, cords and threads, and machine stitching. Circles are then cut out and replaced in different positions.

You will need eight different fabrics in a graded range from dark to light. They can be all shades of the same colour but it can be more effective if you can include two colours – but retain the dark to light effect. Two strips of each fabric are cut making 16 strips in all. Use some plains but tone on tone prints look best. Batiks are ideal.

It is important to have a strong tonal contrast between the darkest and the lightest fabric and a good range of tone in between. It will help if you can stitch these fabrics together beforehand as this will save time on the day – see below. Bring more of each fabric as we will cut further strips to use to embellish the piece.

You may not be able to complete the whole of the project in the workshop, however full instructions will be given for you to be able to complete at home.
