Suitable for everyone who can cast on, cast off, knit and purl.

Practice your intarsia colour work (“picture knitting”) with this cheerful (Michael Craig Martin inspired) purse.

During this 3 hour workshop, you will practice knitting a motif in five colours to create a single thickness fabric. Worked in double knit yarn from a chart, this purse is designed to fit a standard metal purse frame but could also be finished using other techniques if preferred. It can also be worked in alternative yarn weights e.g. Aran weight, which will create a slightly bigger purse, or the chart used to create another rectangular item altogether, such as a cushion.

A printed pattern and chart are provided.

Attendees will need to bring a 50g ball of DK yarn in the main colour (A). Small amounts of up to five other colours in DK are used for the letters. Bring what you have in your stash (and of course the shop is well stocked with yarn if you need to buy anything). Some colours can be repeated if desired, and we can discuss colour and tonal choices on the day if you are unsure.

Also bring a pair of 3.5mm knitting needles (3.75mm will also work), a pair of scissors for snipping yarn, a notepad and pen/pencil, and a tapestry needle. Bring a ruler to help you to keep your place on the knitting chart, or a magnetic board if you have one.

If you are working in a different yarn weight, e.g. Aran, then bring needles a size smaller than you would normally use for that yarn (e.g. 4mm instead of 4.5mm).

The purse knitted to the tension in the pattern using DK yarn is designed to fit a 150mm sew-in metal purse frame. However, it isn’t necessary to have purchased a clasp before the workshop. We can discuss sourcing the frame and alternative finishing techniques for the top during the workshop.
