This course is aimed at knitters who want to move on from making items like scarves and other accessories to making garments. Over the 4 classes we will cover all the information you should need to follow a knitting pattern and make a well finished garment.

Lesson 1 on 7th August
In this class you will learn how the information on a ball band can help you to choose a suitable yarn for your pattern. It will also cover general information about the different types of knitting needles and other notions that can make knitting a pattern much simpler and how to knit a tension swatch.

Lesson 2 on 21st August
There are a variety of methods for casting on and casting off. It is useful to know more than one method of casting on as this can make a big difference to the finished look of your garment. In the class Fiona will use samples to show why you may want to know more than one method of casting on and will then teach you several of these methods.

Lesson 3 on 4th September
Even the simplest of garments will have some shaping around the neckline and usually in the sleeves. In this class you will learn how to work ‘mirrored decreases’ and how to apply this information to the pattern you are working from. If there is time we will also cover the ‘make 1 (m1)’ increases.

Lesson 4 on 25th September
The majority of commercial pattern instruct you to make a number of pattern pieces i.e. back, front and sleeves and then sew these pieces together when making up the garment. In this class we will cover methods of sewing up. You will learn how to sew up seams using mattress stitch. There are occasions when you may need to use backstitch so this will also be covered in the class.

You will need:
* Yarn to work with. I would suggest a smooth light coloured yarn.
* Knitting needles appropriate for the yarn you are using
* The garment pattern you want to make. If you have a pattern but are not sure what yarn to use we can go through this information in the first Lesson.
* Notebook and pen to make extra notes if you want.
