Learn how to transfer the essence of a portrait photograph onto fabric using simple hand embroidery stitches.
Be brave, get your full trout pout out, and bring along a Selfie to work from (or a portrait photo of a loved one or pet if you would rather).
Have fun creating a picture of a picture of you and perhaps embellishing it a little. Green hair? No problem. Full red lips? Why not. You can make it as close to the original as you like or add a bit of creative license and go to town with a caricature.
During this three hour workshop Nicky will teach you how to simplify a photo by identifying the main features. She will then show you a simple method of transferring those features on to fabric using back stitch. Other simple embroidery stitches can then be added to the image to give it more interest if desired, and additional possibilities for embellishment will be discussed and examples given.
Suitable for everyone who can thread a needle and trace an outline.
Attendees will need to bring:
  • a printed portrait photograph to work from, maximum size 18cm square, on white cartridge paper or photo paper, suitable to trace.
  • please bring a pencil and a rubber, and scissors for snipping thread.
Other materials will be provided:
  • a piece of stabilised cotton fabric will be provided along with a bundle of stranded cotton threads and an embroidery needle.
  • a handout will be provided
